I need help from the experts on this one. What is it? It says Stanley and has a clamp on the back side and holes with three set screws on the front. It looks to have been chromed or nickel plated at one time.

George, I think you are right. WOuld have held a point or pencel and a pair attached to some kind of beam. Trammel explains all the holes etc.

Looks like George nailed it.

The John Walter book shows them on page 635.

They are listed as "Machinist Trammels."

There are two models #5 & #6. The #6 was stamped on one of the top screws. The #6 came with 8 points and a roller scribe.

An original set looks to be pretty pricey in the $200 and up range.

I got this tammel in a bag of junk for $10. Also in the bag was a Stanley No. 51 SH spoke shave, a Brown & Sharpe #510 protractor (pat Dec. 2, 1890), a Perfection nutcracker (pat. 1914) and 2 calipers.

Some people pay $10 and more for a Stanley No. 51 all by its lonesome. And you got this trammel set half, and a neat-looking protractor (I looked up the patent, here: http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?id=18223), and other good toys. Good score!

Some people think you need both halves of a trammel point set to work. But if you drive a nail near one end of a stick a little longer than your desired radius, with the point sticking out, you can clamp what you've got to the other end, and go to work.

I wonder what the holes and set screws are for? Perhaps some kind of fine adjustment?

If you search for "Stanley 6 Trammel" on Jim Bode Tools (or eBay - he's usually got his stuff posted both on his site and eBay) he's got a complete set. I'm not even sure what one would do with all those pieces!

I wonder what the holes and set screws are for?

There are different tips that allow it to be used as an inside or outside caliper and also hold a second set of tips for a different operation.

Kind of the deluxe trammel set.
