After cutting more blanks from the carob logs after work today, I decided that I still had enough time to feed the addiction and turn a small bowl. The blank was from one of the biggest logs. I had cut out a large bowl blank but it was much thicker than I would need for a large bowl, so I cut the bottom off and ended up with this blank. I normally do cut the bottoms off bowl blanks, but usually it's a much thinner slice and just sapwood.
Since it was such a big log, the sapwood area is almost a perfect circle and would have been more so if the log was more symetrical. I like the look and may have to try a few more from the other big logs.
It's 6" x 1 3/4" with a coat of BLO. Crappy pics from the shop don't show it to best advantage but I didn't feel like getting the photo tent set up.

Wow.......I like the grain orientation on this Kathy..........nice job getting it so the heartwood made a ring around the rim! That is just too cool!

Beautiful!

I thought it was pottery when I first looked.

Like Pete, I think it looks like a very nice piece of pottery with a glazed rim - nice effect, Kathy!

Beautiful! My first thoughts were that it reminds me of McCoy stoneware!

Nice effect Kathy! Never thought of trying that. Its a nice example of how good design starts with the chainsaw!

That's just beautiful! Love the grain orientation... And it looks like there is a lot going on in that sapwood, too.

Kathy,
A very nice bowl. I like it a lot. It almost looks like stone pottery with your orientation. I second the idea of not setting up the photo tent.

Thanks guys! Without the orientation, it would be just a plain, average little bowl, so I'm glad I chanced upon a blank cut just right to ring the rim with heartwood. Hopefully i can duplicate it and now I'm thinking it would really be cool if I could get a blank big enough to turn a plate with a ringed rim!

That's a really neat bowl, Kathy. I love how it looks like it's filled with Cream of Wheat. Great job!

Kathy
Great idea and real nice execution it seems like the others have all the great details pointed out.
I may use that plate idea, I do believe that will work it will just take a larger log to get a dinner sized plate.

Only fitting that a carob bowl would be made of carob wood! Second (and third and fourth) on the excellent grain orientation...
