I was not happy about the way that elm box turned out [as if you couldn't tell! :D] Today I took a piece of mahogany that I picked up 6 years ago ........this was a laminated piece out of boards [I think they were cutoffs from a furniture factory that made bed posts] I have been wanting to do something useful with this for a while, and this box series I am doing seemed a good place for this piece of scrap.

I originally was going to do a flat box, but with the discovery of a box elder burl I forgot I had stashed away, I decided to make a similar one to the spalted maple/walnut that I made a few days ago........I think the proportions on this lid are better.......see what you think! It is 4-5/16 wide at the base and 4.25 tall.

I think the box elder burl lid is nicer than the walnut lid, and the contrast is good with the lighter lid and darker box on this one.

I like this combination, and some discrete beads on the body would hide the glue joint. Ask Wally if you can borrow his magic bead tool!:D

Thanks Jamie.........I do not have a beading tool.........but I do know how to make them!!! It did not occur to me to hide that glue joint........I guess because it was there when I got the thing!

That's a neat little box, but boy, I love the top and the details of the shape! Nice!

Roger I really like this box and lid. Wood combo is really nice. I do agree with Jamie a couple of beads would real do it.

Thanks Bernie.......if we could only think of these embellishments before we finish the forms! ;)

Aside from hiding the glue line, this is an excellent box, Roger. Great contrast that will get even better as the mahogany ages.

Nice combination of woods! Instead of beads to hide the glue joint... you could always use a jam chuck and do a couple of burn lines... if you have to do something. I think it looks fine as is!
