I guess the answer is very carefully. I paint the bleach on with a small paint brush and just try to let it bleed right up to the edge. It takes about 3 or 4 passes to get the Walnut light. You have to do light coats so it doesn't penetrate too deep. I then use a very diluted white wash and wipe it on and off quickly, just to get some white into the deep pores. Lastly I sand back the edges to clean up any bleed.

The lines are just carved right through the bleach layer to expose the Walnut underneath.
