Had a bit of time to kill and some old unfinished flooring. My lovely bride has been on me to make her a little planter box holder so I went out and whipped this up this afternoon. Sometimes the simple little things give a lot of satisfaction. She just wanted it basic and somewhat rustic, so no need to make it all clean and crisp, It was fun to just try and punch something out quick without having to fret the details!

Anyways, here it is... Nothing fancy... Just fun!

Nice, Bob. I really like it too!!

In addition to the dovetails, what did you use to hold the sides together at the corners? With the limited flat-grain gluing surface... ???

Looks great, is the bottom open?

Looks a lot nicer than what we've got on our porch, I may have to make some of these. What'd you use for finish?

Thanks guys... I just glued the DT's with Tightbond III. It seems to hold plenty tight. If they don't hold for any reason, I may just pin them with cut nails. It does not have a bottom. It is just a really simple frame holding the planter. I finished it with a light rub with BLO and then 3 quick coats of amber shellac that I lightly sanded after to knock back the shine slightly.

If the shellac doesn't last scuff it up and apply a couple coats of good marine spar varnish. I like the stuff from Epifanes and Interlux.

That's cool. I had to re-read and re-look. I first thought the box was made from 2x6's and I thought where do you find 2x6's that look that nice. What are the dimensions?

I don't know exactly... Haha! I never took a measurement to tell you the truth. I just took the plastic plant box she wanted and marked it off on the wood and went at it. It is just some unfinished flooring that I planed off the bottom grooving and the tongue and grooving. I will measure it later and let you know...
