View Full Version : What am I?

Am I a platter or a bowl? 30 segment piece consiting of soft maple, mesquite, and mahogany. 10" diameter x 2" high.

The piece is shaped a little too much like a speaker to be a platter and a little too flat to be a bowl. Will finish with General WTF when I get it. I collaborated with John Keeton after seeing his thread on WTF and told John if it fails, then I will give him all the credit.

This design violates the accepted practice of not putting a segmented center in a piece due to fear of cracking due to movement. One of the members of our club has done this for a number of years, so we will see.

C&C invited.

I don't know what to call it either although I do like the design. Perhaps if you had a picture from the side a better determination of bowl or platter??

Tom, if it doesn't fit either category - it is art!!! I can't speak to the integrity of the piece as I don't do segmentation. There are a lot of opposing grains, but you have used some pretty stable woods. Hopefully, that will keep it intact. Very nice work on the design and the glue up, and I am sure you will do a great job with the finish!

Fine piece of work Tom..........I sure hope it holds together over time for you ........ a good quality glue will help if you used one on it, but anyway you look at it .........that is a real fine piece of work!

I count 40 pieces, but the cops say I don't count from 100 backwards very well, so maybe I'm wrong...

Anyway, I love the design. And I vote +1 for the plowl. ;)

I can't see a profile so don't know what to call it except exceptional. Let us see the finish item in profile and then we can call it a bowl, platter, saucer, or tray. Nicely done. I just got some WTF after all the talk, but haven't tried it yet. Something else to try.

Mike, technically you are right. However, the star segment is 10 pieces with the tips cut off and contrasting wood glued on, then the segment is recut. Then the 10 segments (including tips) are glued in a ring. Then 2 more rings of 10 each above that.

The cops are wrong, by the way.
