I put a coat of MINWAX Wood-Sheen, Rubbing Oil Stain & Finish on my workbench base today, and I'm not happy with the color, specifically lack of color I got. I was shooting for a deeper darker color than I got, less yellow, more brown. I know if I had used straight stain (which I probably should have) I could go over it with a second coat of different color and would be OKAY. Question is, can I do the same when using a rub on color & finish, that is use the same brand but a different color? I'm thinking the second coat will not penetrate (absorb) like the first coat. If I use a darker shade, will it penetrate evenly or end up streaking over the first coat?

The directions specify a second coat two hours later.

If you can find a color you like in the minwax ploy shades, which is a ploy with color added. You can apply the ploy and change the color at the same time. Each coat gets darker and darker so if you reach the shade you want before enough finish is on you can switch to clear and continue adding coats.
