Many thanks to Richard Raffan for the how to article that appeared in Fine Woodworking on making scoops. I always seem to pay my show space fees on the sale of scoops alone. Stuck in a bowl of M&M's or advertised as coffee scoops they seem to sell well not only as a single item but also to those that purchase a bowl or other vessel. Various sizes and species in a 13" maple bowl, walnut oil finish.

C&C on work always welcome

Wow that was a fast response. Roger, one good thing about making them is the wood doesn't have to be as seasoned as for you boxes!

Nice variety of woods! I can see why they would be big sellers!

When I first started turning - I turned a number Raffin style scoops! They were a lot of fun and we are still using them today!!

Thanks for that issue date John. I couldn't find mine, it used to be out in my shop but somehow it ended up in the collection where it would normally be.

The wife wants to know------do you drill the scoop or is it turned. I have never tried so I don't have a answer. I am guessing you start with a 2x2 ?

Gary, 2" to 2-1/2" seems to work and don't bother to round it off for the chuck. I don't use a drill just a 1/2" spindle gouge with a medium fingernail grind (cutting on what might be considered the wrong side-from center to about 1:00 o'clock) then a scraper with a round nose and long left side. Don't see why you couldn't drill but you would have to do additional work on the bottom shape

Phillip, thanks for posting that link. One thing I might add is I never make a jamb chuck to reverse the scoop and finish the bottom of the handle. It takes me almost as much time to accomplish this as turn everything else up to that point. I just use a little more wood, and part them off using the skew, then sand the end.
