An almost total neanderthal build. Ash legs and rails ( I did rip the legs from a 2" x 7" plank of rough sawn Ash with a circular-saw, I didn't want to risk a crooked cut). Air dried Elm top.

I put a red dye, followed by a Brown Mahogany gel stain on the legs and rails; didn't like it, so I scraped it back off (mostly):(

The big challenge will be to unify the color and I'm a novice at this level of finishing.

The Elm top is glued up from 3 boards; I couldn't avoid some sap wood. I'm quite pleased with the way the table top pegs turned out.

To go from rough lumber to finished boards, I use a Stanley #5 with a cambered blade, then a Stanley #6, followed by a 24" wooden Try plane and a wooden smoother where needed.

* Inspired by Jack Plane and his amazing work

Greg, that's a pretty nifty little table. I particularly like how you've mounted the table to the rails/legs - must have been fun to cut those!

That elm top looks really nice. Sure would like to see it with a finish. Are you planning to go natural / clear or stain?

Nice set of gouges in that last shot! What are those?

The table will be stained Reddish-brown then oiled.
I really like the look of Elm (this was air-dried) - it works wonderfully with handtools; I've never used it before and will see if my Sawyer has some more- hopefully in wider boards- this board was just under 7"; I would have liked a another 1" overhang all around; I built the base 1st; thinking I had some wider Elm ... should have checked:o

The set of gouges (on the right) are Ward, graduated in sweep/size. I attended a CW " Working Wood in ..." back about 2000(?) where the cabinet makers mentioned the gouges required to do the basic furniture carving- curves, volutes, etc. and this set matched pretty close.

I bought these about 25 yrs ago at an Estate auction... back when you could find "in the wild" anything from matched sets of bench chisels, to Cesar Chelor planes to bushel baskets of handsaws- and sometimes with little competition in the bidding.
