Found a source for some NIP so ordered some. Wanted to make a 2 or 3 vases. I had turned one about 3 yrs ago and didn't really want to sell it but the director at the art gallery wanted me to bring it down to display it. Anyway long story short I thought ok I will put $185 on it and no one would think of buying it. Well a lady came in and put down cash so I reluctantly took it. Anyway found some blanks and ordered them. 2 blanks were 8 X 6 and one was 7.5 X 5. This one finished measures 7 X 4 with walls a consistant 3/8" and is finished with 1 coat of antique oil to pop the grain and 12 coats of WTF. The 5th coat was sanded with 400 and the 9th coat with 800. No sanding on the last 3 coats. Two views from the top (front and back) and a profile. This one will go into my display case.

Bernie,
This hollow form is one of the nicest pieces I've seen you post. I can understand why you wanted to keep it. Use the money for more wood and get to work on turning.

Nice work on this one, too, Bernie! Nice form and great color. That NIP is some neat stuff and I keep saying I want to get some. May have to find out your source if you don't mind giving it up.

Wow Bernie, that is really beautiful. You've brought out all of the best in the wood and the form is really nice too. I think I'd add a zero or two to the price of this one.

Thanks again. Curt I think you may be right add a zero for sure. I don't know what it is about NIP but it sure is a nice turning wood and the colors you never know. I love it when you can angle the cut and get the eye's to open up.

Great piece Bernie! That sure is some great looking wood!
Next time you don't want to sell a piece, just price it high enough that you would be happy to see it go to a new home!

Bernie,
Nice job on the NIP. I just received about a dozen blanks from them. They are great to work with and have nice wood. NIP is one of my favorite to work with. Have you used the Pentacryl to stabilize the drying process like he recommends? I have used it on several NIP hollow forms and there was virtually no movement of the wood - and no cracking. It's a bit pricey, but I really like it. It also speeds up the drying process significantly.

Congrats on your sale.

Bernie, that's really beautiful! Norfolk Island pine is my current favorite and I have four pieces currently in process. Each takes about three months to complete because they are all transllucent, turned to about 1/16" and repeatedly soaked in an oil mix, sanded and dryed. Am doing a magazine article on the process. One tip that's worked well for me - try soaking the rough turned piece in dishwashing detergent for 24 hrs. and it'll turn a lot easier. If you have a good source for NIP and don't mind sharing it please PM me.

Thanks again.

Eric I haven't tried the pentacryl. I turn these to finish and then soak them in antique oil. Movement has been minimal if any at all.

Bill I haven't tried the soap like I said I turn start to finish. It has been working well for me. PM sent Bill.

Nevermind this reply. I didn't see your answer earlier and assumed my reply didn't post.
