I caught a snag a couple of weeks ago and the bowl flew off and hit the floor and cracked. It required a lot of 80 grit hand sanding to remove the gouges on the inside and 12 stitches to close the wound.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I read that title Deane, so I'm glad to see that the stitches are on the bowl!

Deane, what did you use for the sutures? Rawhide, split ash, ....? Nice look and great recovery. Reminds me of some photos of some butterfly inlays that Ellsworth showed in his book.
Some, though, might start calling it Frankenbowl :D.

Now you have really started to get artsy. When will you take up quilting? The stiching looks great. I had to look a second time to see where you tied off. It looks like the wood was green and distortorted also, but it is a good conversation piece. Nice save.

Very nice save as I was almost afraid to look at the post thinking you were the one with 12 stitches

Deane, looks as though the patient survived and is doing well!! However, that sure is going to take a while to heal and I would suggest a solid diet - no liquids!;)

Nice clean ties on those sutures, I can't even see the knots. Really a great save.

Yep. Been doing that for years myself. "When all you have is lemons, start making lemonade." Sometimes I make the sutures neat and tidy (like yours) and sometimes I do them as grungy and raggedy as I can. This bowl is one of my green-turned warpies, so it has that additional ugly, too.

A happy ending! I like the saying; "there are no mistakes, only design changes" and you ended up with a more original and interesting piece than planned. I do a lot of Arts and Crafts shows, and I've found people seem to go crazy over stuff like that, and will pay a much higher price for it!

232067232068You can add even more "value" to the stitches by dangling something like beads from the tag ends.;)

Nice job on the stitching Deane. I might have just tossed the whole thing when it cracked, but you probably have made it more desirable/valuable to many than if it had never cracked to begin with.

I'm going to start cracking my bowls on purpose! Nice job! Are you a surgeon by day and a bowl fixer by night? :)
