Well got a little turning time and did some pyro on this platter. It is maple 15" in diameter and finished with rattle can lacquer. This is a picture of a mule deer I took last fall. Was going to add some color but decided against it. I am pretty pleased with it.

Looks like that inner "R-teesst" is knocking hard and trying to get out where everyone can see it work........that is really nice, Bernie! Did you "take" the mule deer with the camera, or is he in your freezer? I like the platter...........nice work!

Very nice Bernie, wish I had the talent to do some pyrography. Did you get the mulie in Kansas or Colorado?

Maple, I presume? Very well done, Bernie! Of course, it would be better with a "real" deer - the Whitetail, instead of those funny running mulies you guys have out west!!:D Just kidding! You obviously did well on the hunt, too.

Thanks everyone. It took a fine picture and fortunately for him he is still around the farm. I just love going out there to the what used to be my dads farm early in the morning and just sit in the creek bottom. You would be amazed at what you see. I actually quit hunting a few years ago since the wife cannot eat wild game anymore.

John it would take about two of your whitetail to make one of these big boys. The last one I took with a bow a 6 X 6 about 5 yrs ago field dressed at about 280 lbs. Yep good old corn fed mulies.:D;)

Thanks again. Ken that boy is a big one. I have tried to get a picture of another one but he is pretty elusive and he is a 7 X 6. I definitely would like to burn a picture of him.

Great looking platter Bernie! I still remember hunting Mulies when I lived in Montana! Huge deer when compared to a Whitetail!

Bernie, nice work on this. I've done some pyro on platter rims but never brave enough to work on the inner surface! We have mulies here and although they are bigger than the white tails, they are not typically huge.

Excellent work on that fine platter! My dad would love it since he has always been a big dear hunter.

Thanks again.

Hayes we have a couple around here that are big boys with some big racks. I do walk back on the farm but it is kinda rare to see those two.

Really nice work on the platter and the burning! I hunt Sitka Blacktail in southeast Alaska - tastiest meat I have ever had but they are small animals. 150 pounds pre-dressed is a decent buck! I bet those mules would make my blacktails look like Labradors!

Thanks Jon. Out here they have a lot of grain to eat so get fairly big.

That's really beauiful! I like both the top and bottom. Man, I go away for a few weeeks while my PC is in the shop and you've turned into an artist.

Fantastic job on the pyro, I am always amazed by what talented folks can do with it. I consider myself lucky if I can burn a few clean lines and shadows.

Great job on the pyro Bernie, but let's not overlook the platter, which is very nice. Which tips did you use for the Pyro?

Bernie Weishapl

Thanks again. The more I learn the more interesting it gets. My next project is yet the biggest I have tried. Hopefully it will turn out.

Steven I have a dual pen Optima 1. I use a modified writing tip, a small round skew tip and a spoon shader most of the time. I have a 5/64" ball tip, spear point, medium skew, and large round shader which come in handy as I learn more on burning. The first three I use most of the time I would say would get you by while learning. The others are what I would call specialty tips for more advanced burning.

Bernie,
How the heck did you get that deer to look like a deer. If I had tried to draw an deer it would have looked like a cloths tree. Fine woodturning too. I am thinking about the excitement of harvesting such a fine creature. I'm sure you weren't at a loss for places to grab him when it came time to haul him out of the woods.

Thanks Faust. Problem is I took the picture on the hoof. He is still in the woods.:D Along with one bigger than he is. I have been working with my sister and a artist here in town trying to better my skills. Both of them are excellent artists.
