Crop rings in my lawn?

For a number of years, I have had 4-5 circular rings in my lawn ranging from about 6 to 15 feet in diameter. The shape is circular and is just the outer ring of a circle. The grass is greener and grows faster. I have noticed mushrooms growing in the ring. What is it??? How do I eliminate it??? My ray gun hasn't worked...

Bob,

What you describe sounds like "fairy ring". Do a google search to get information. The most often recommendation I saw was soil aeration and deep watering short of removing the sod and underlying soil.

I have many of the grass rings in my lawn. The sizes vary from around 12 inches across to over 48 inches. At one time I thought the rings were caused by the many deer that visited us during the night and left their bodily functions behind fertilizing the ring areas. Our next door neighbor has the fungi rings in several areas of their lawn. The mushrooms are huge white things that grow in a circle about the same size rings as my grass rings.

Sounds like fairy rings. I haven't had them in my lawn for a number of years so can't remember how to treat them but I think it required aerating the area.

I do have a septic system but it is on the opposite side of the house. Speaking of elves and fairies, would you believe I live in the town of Erin? All of our town roads have to have Irish names and everyone is Irish on March 17th. I only wish the mushrooms were morels. Haven't had any luck finding any so far this year and a good friend of mine says he walked about 15 miles last week and found 5 of them.

Morel season here was early and pretty sparse picking. Article in the Lincoln NE. paper last week, dried morels at the farmers market were going for $270.00 per pound. :eek:
