I think we all have read and seen some of the projects and tutorials that Mike Henderson has made in veneer.
So recently I decided to try to make the sand shaded fan and compass rose that Mike has made tutorials about. Here are my results:

These were my first attempts at the projects. I do have some experience with veneering but with Mike’s tutorials it made it a lot easier to produce these small parquetry projects. I would encourage anyone that thinks this type of project is too difficult or beyond their skill level to try it. It’s not really that hard especially with Mikes help.

Good Luck and thanks again for makeing the tutorials Mike!

Thanks for the kind works, Richard. That's some very good work you did there. The shading is nice, even, and the elements fit into the background veneer well (no gaps that I can see).

I'll just post one more link, to a slightly different compass rose (http://www.mikes-woodwork.com/CompassRose.htm). This one only requires a 45 degree triangle, but it's a bit more work than the one you linked to.

And thanks for posting. It's good to hear that people are are using the tutorials.

Mike the shading came out fairly well but next time I am going to use a gas fired heat source as it took fairly long to get the wood to burn using electrical heat. Also none of the parquetry is glued to a substrate (just blue tape on the back) so there is some small gaps at the borders that would flatten out once glued. Next time I will make one of these for a pacific project in mined and incorporate it in the design.

Also I like the rose in the second tutorial it’s got nice dimension to it.

Mike, your work is really beautiful. Stunning.

Thanks for posting the tutorial. It's on my list of things to do (which keeps growing.)

Very nice Richard! I can't wait till all the grunt work is done @ my house so I can sit down and try something like mikes projects. Sure looks satisfying!
