I've never posted pictures of my work before. Here are some boxes I made a little while ago.
From left to right: Madagascar rosewood, bocote, mopane, and cocobolo. They all have a gentle suction fit lid.... just enough to lift them and have the lid come off

I used to make them, when I started turning, with a lid that went pop when it was removed. I found that people/customers didn't like that because if it didn't come off easily, they were afraid to pull too hard. Also, the tight fitting lids and suction don't agree with contents of the box!

Thanks for looking, comments welcomed.

Those are some nice boxes Nick! A great selection of woods and I like how you did the tops on the last 2.

Nick, great to see some of your work!! Really well done, and a beautiful selection of woods. The attention to details is what make these different, like the well placed beads and the dome tops. Thanks!

Beautiful work, Nick. The woods are gorgeous and your attention to detail is admirable. A real lesson in making the simple box fantastic. Great post.

Glad you posted those Nick! I have the same issue with lids. Although suction fit is the sign of a good box maker...it isn't always functional!

Typical of Nick's work. I even own a couple of his pieces. I agree with the lid thing, when people pick one up, if they have to pull, they generally put it back down.

If I picked one of these up, I wouldn't put it back down...:)

I appreciate all the comments and compliments!

All the boxes are sanded to 600 grit. The finish on the boxes is sanding sealer cut 50:50 with lacquer thinners, friction dried with a paper towel. Hand applied EEE Ultra Shine and then rubbed in with the lathe running, and then a coat of Renaissance wax as the final finish. The EEE removes any ridging from the sanding sealer.

Those really look excellent! Grain matched up so nicely I really enjoy boxes! Boxes are so handy and make great little gifts. All your techniques seem to show when making boxes... there seems is no hiding! from design to demensions, tool work, sanding and finishing. Raffen's video making boxes is one of my all time favorite videos.
