Howdy, All,
I recently picked up a used DeWalt 735 planer. Not gloat-worthy, but a decent deal, I think. I am considering, in the not too distant future, upgrading from the standard knives to a helical cutter head. I know about the Byrd, but I'm vaguely recollecting (perhaps incorrectly) that there is also a second option. Any one know of what that might be, or is my recall faulty? I'm inclined to just go with the Byrd but thought I'd ask first. Thanks!

Infinity has carbide knives, ten times the life for three times the cost.

Infinity also makes steel knives for the 735 that last longer than the original DeWalt knives. A Byrd head is expensive. Do you plane enough wood to justify the expense? The conventional knives in that sander do a very nice job for much less up front cost. You would need to use your 735 a lot to justify a Byrd head on knife replacement costs.

I got sick of how fast the DeWalt blades in my 735 dulled and got a Byrd head for it.
I ended up trading it for a Bridgewood 15" with straight knives. If I had it to do over again I'd skip the Byrd head step.
Just my opinion, YMMV.

I think you might be thinking of the accu-head that's used in the steel city 13" portable planer that is also being offered for other makes.

I put a Byrd in my 735. Never looked back.
Figured and birds-eye comes out beautiful.
