Sweet Gum Bowl - An experiment with a new piercing tool that seems to be working out. Around 6" (15cm) across. Finished with EM6000 waterborne lacquer over Bush Oil.

Poplar Hollow Form Vase - The second of my experiments with the Chris Pytlik dye technique. My deepest hollow form yet, just over 8" (20cm) deep. Finished with EM6000 waterborne lacquer.

Great pieces. I love the piercing in the bowl. It would not be good for soup though.lol

Eric, the bowl is very well done!! Nice work on the piercing. While the form on the vase is quite different from what is normally seen, you sure gave life to that poplar with the color!

Very nice on both. Is the piercing design like a variation of yin yang? Need to see it straight down to better appreciate the design.

Thanks everyone

John, I am quite new to hollow forms, and am just experimenting with various shapes and depths. For now, I'm doing them in spindle orientation making them taller than wide. Eventually I will start to experiment with side grain orientation and try out the wider than tall forms.

Bill, yes the piercing design is a variation of yin yang, with the two halves pulled apart and their tails wrapped around the center. When I get a chance, I'll take a photo from a different angle.

Donny, maybe it's a colander...

Beautiful! I really like that pierced bowl. What kind of piercing tool are you using? Are you doing it on the lathe or off? Nice!

Bill, here is a shot of the bottom so you can see how the tails of the yin yang forms intertwine

Jenny, I pierced this off the lathe with a cheap dental handpiece off of eBay. The handpiece plus the hose with the special fitting for the handpiece cost $35. I like my NSK Presto better, but this was an experiment to see if folks can get an inexpensive piercing rig to try it out rather than spend $350 for a top end tool.

Wow and Wow. I like both a lot. I favor the bowl, but both great. I love the simplicity of the vase though.
