Well, we finally got a nice day, so I took the day off so I could cut up an old Pear Tree in the back yard. It's very pretty wood. I cut some large blanks and decided to take one of the 5" limbs and stick it on the lathe. I wasn't trying to create anything dazzling but I wanted to get an idea how this stuff turned and what it would look like. I was very impressed. It turns easily and it has an impressive grain. The last picture is some 1.5X1.5X12 blanks if any of you are interested. Just PM me and I'll send you a couple. If anyone is interested in some larger pieces, I'm willing to give up a few of those as well.

Oh, I guess I should mention, this weekend, I'm going to dig the burl out of the ground and cut that up as well. I'll post some more pictures then. Oh, and also, I don't intend to charge anything, but I would appreciate it if you'd pick up the shipping.

Because I am not as proficient on the lathe as I'll be in 10 years, I'd really like to see someone turn some of this tree into some nice pens or a bowl or something.

I've decided that the spindle-looking thing above is going to be a lamp. I'll make the lamp shade out of the same wood with stained glass. I'll post a picture when it's done.

I cut up some Bradford pear for firewood recently, and it had some impressive grain. I'm not a turner, or I'd try to make something of it.
