picked it up at a flea market today. Miller Falls line called Mohawk- Shelburne #700 Block plane. Little guy, about 7" long. iron is 1-5/8" wide. Still some red paint on the cap, and some black on the base. Did find a spider nest under the iron, though.230225this is after an hour of clean up...230226230227230228still need to turn a new knob. This will be going for a long soak, until all is nice and clean. pits? Yep, but not too bad ones. That adjusting wheel is a bit different, though. :D

A rough-work plane like that can be handy, if the cutting iron's not too thin, pitted, or otherwise inadequate.

Stanley used similar thumbscrews on some of their utility block planes, such as the 110. It doesn't really adjust, as you no doubt understand; just tightens up the lever cap. It's the ancestor of the cap design used on Lie-Nielsen planes, although LNs go for a bit more than your find. And, yes, they're pretty things.

I note you're missing the front knob. It's possible (not for sure) that the thread pattern on the stud is the same as Stanley used, in which case you can buy a replacement knob from Stanley, still: http://www.stanleytoolparts.com/12110usa.html The replacement knobs are some light anonymous hardwood (probably birch or the like) stained kind of a brown color, not nearly as nice as the rosewood knobs used in the prime of Stanley's production, but serviceable.

Great find for a buck. Those are handy planes for lots of things.

My #102 is slightly smaller but is a great little plane. It set me back $2.52 with tax.

I did something similar on some planes I donated to the Habitat ReStore, using some wooden ball knobs I happened to have around. As long as there's somewhere to rest your index finger or grab if you should need to use it two-handed.

Looks good.

Looks good! What did you soak it in to get it looking like that?

Simple Green, some Green scratch pads, some 80 grit sandpaper, and rustoleum Black spray paint. Sharpen that little iron up, and made some shavings on a poplar board's "face'230398 It's only about 7" long, with a blade width of 1-5/8". Just a $1 in a flea market....
