View Full Version : A pretty cool piece of walnut (in bowl form with malachite inlay)

This came from a branch a few months ago. I saw what I'm going to refer to as droplets when I turned it, but I wasn't sure it would survive drying since they both had cracks even while green. It did survive and I think it turned out pretty neat. Crushed up some malachite to fill in the cracks and the hole and sanded, buffed, oiled and ren waxed it. The drop on the right looks particularly like one of those high speed camera shots of a water drop hitting a larger pool of water. I guess this is chocolate milk though.

Very nice, I always like when Turquoise inlace can be implimented in a turning. Well done.

Looks nice, Jeremy. I like the thicker walls on this one. Nice wood and inlay.

Jeremy, I think a little defect added a whole lot! Well done!

Jeremy, you are producing some nice walnut bowls! Great contrast with the sapwood in this one. I am not much on colored fill, but you did a good job with it here.

I agree with john regarding color fill, but this one is certainly the exception. I think for me its because there is so little and that it contrasts so nicely with both the heart and SAP wood.

Again, very cool.

Thank you for the feedback everyone. I've always personally been drawn (as someone admiring turned pieces) to natural crushed stone inlay. Now that I have a lathe I'm really excited to be able to do some of my own experiments with it. It looks like malachite is a good match for walnut with sapwood at least. I think I may like it better than turquoise but I haven't used that with walnut yet. Certainly sands easier.

Edit: Sorry Charlie. Forgot to reply. It's a round of sycamore I sanded down and oiled.

Jeremy,
I like the form and the thickness of the sides. Also a good choice for filling the voids too. Well Done.

Personally, I'm with JK on the malachite. I think it distracts the eye. And this is a bowl I would rather not have my eye distracted from. It's a very sweet form, simple and unpretentious but made bold by the thick walls. It has real substance and begs to be used. No one is going to be picking it up gently for fear of breaking it. There is nothing "precious" about it. I like it very much!
