Tim Rinehart and I did a little wood exchange when we were at John Campbell last month and this is what I came up with from the cherry burl I am holding in the first pic. It is 7" wide and 5" tall. It is a bit thick at around 3/8" but so many pieces were falling off that I didn't want to push my luck much further. Finished with danish oil and destined to be a housewarming gift for a co-worker this weekend. Let me know what you think.

Wow, very nice Bob!

I'm amazed it didn't blow up on you. I'm sure there were some light passes going on there!

Good work.

Nice work Bob. The wood is very pretty and I like the finish. Was it a pretty dry/old one? The colors remind me much more of the dead cherry burls I have found where much of the rest of the tree had rotted away than it does of the fresh ones I have cut and turned.

Amazing piece of work there! No better feeling that knowing the next cut is going to be the one that blows the piece up and it never happens. The deep, warm color of that cherry makes this spectacular.

I have got to get my hands on some cherry with some character...all I have turned so far has been a dream to turn, but bland.

Great looking piece! I like the form, and the grain is rich. Did you use any stains or dyes, or did you finish darken the wood a little? Whatever it was, I really like the color.

Bob, that is certainly a well done piece! Great wood, too. Keller would love this one with all those voids!:D

Beautiful work Bob! Great form - love the rich coloring! Really like the natural edge opening... what there is of one! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all the comments. The wood was fairly dry though not completely, definitely still some moisture deep within. This is the natural color of the wood though, of course, the danish oil does bring out the color and richness. I did not use any duct tape or other wrap. Actually, never felt that it was at risk of blowing up though there are some punky areas where pieces would just fall off as I hollowed. A catch, however, would not have been pretty!

Bob...beautiful job you did with a really ugly piece of cherry burl!! Love the irregular NE top and the finish is a good choice.
Well done, I'm sure it will be well received by your co-worker.
I need a co-worker like you!!

Beautiful! Form is spot on. This would look great regardless of the wood. The fantastic burl figure and color is just the "icing on the cake".

Bob ya dun good. I like the color of this one as well. I have a rough turned piece that I may return today, it is a little taller than your but not as wide. Thanks for showing.
