During a walk in the park about a month ago, my wife & I cam across a huge pile of wood waiting to be cut up into firewood. Sitting among the taller grass was a giant red elm burl, which I got permission to take home. These are the first 2 pieces I made. On the back of the vase there is an image of a bearded man. Some have said it is a wood spirit, others are reminded of the image from the Shroud of Turin.

The vase is 8" tall and 4 1/2" inches at the widest section. The bowl is 11" diameter x 3 1/2" deep. Both are finished with polyurethane.

Great wood Doug and those are some nice turnings! Nothing like a walk in the woods and finding something special!

Doug, those are some nice pieces! Given what I have seen in the news about folks that pay unbelievable sums of money for a piece of toast or a cornflake with a particular shape/image, no telling what your vase is worth!:D

Bowl - nice
Vase - Fantastic! Love the shape and the "imbedded spirit" adds a touch of mystery...

That is a really cool piece! +1 on it having extra value for having a face in the wood.
