This is from a branch of rotten sycamore that fell in our yard. I was pleasantly surprised with all of the spalting and figure. 10" tall x 4.5" wide

Very nice looking piece. I like how you were able to incorporate that natural edge in the rim of the piece.

I've been turning quite a bit of sycamore lately, and I will say that it spalts better than most woods I've ever turned. The tricky part is catching it at that moment right before the wood starts to break down so you can get all the great lines and warm tones spalting produces. I'd say mission accomplished on this one.

That's the ones I really enjoy. The one that's staring the fireplace right in the eye. Then the lathe calls for it, and it- turns- into a Cinderella story. That's a real beauty very well done.

Eric, this one has a bunch of character! I have turned a couple pieces of sycamore and it is great wood to turn, especially when it looks like this.

Beautiful piece! Did you have to stabilize it any?

That is a fine piece. Sycamore is one of my favorites, especially with all the character this one has.

Very nice work Eric! I really like the natural opening - gives the piece even more character!! Sure is some pretty wood!!

Beautiful piece! Did you have to stabilize it any?

Jason, I didn't stabilize it. It was fairly pithy in places, but overall it was fairly stable. It sanded fairly smooth after a few final passes with a sharp bowl gouge. The splits down the side caused me some concern, but THIS one survived. I can't say that about a subsequent piece. More on that later.

Thanks for the compliments and comments.
