Just in case anyone starts sending out a search party, I thoiught that I post this thread saying that Margaret and I are leaving tomorrow for an (almost) month long car trip that will include most of the western states in the USA.

Here is a summary of our itinerary:

-Vancouver British Columbia -1 night
-Seattle Washington -2 nights
-Boise Idaho area -1 night
-Sandy Utah -2 nights
-Southern Utah -2 nights
-Northern New Mexico -7 nights
-Grand Canyon area -3 nights
-Death Valley California -2 nights
-Northern Nevada -1 night
-Northern California coast -2 nights
-Vancouver Washington -1 night
-Seattle Washington -3 nights
-Vancouver British Columbia -1 night

I might be logging on occasionaly during the trip - but certainly not very often.

Frank,

I hope you have a great time. I see no reason why this trip should affect your posting. I think the picture police would approve of a travelogue complete with pictures. :D

Frank....sounds like a fun trip. Are you going from Seattle to Boise and if so what route are you taking? If you happen to pass through the Lewiston Idaho area I would really like to meet you!

Thanks for the invite Ken, but that is one of our "we have to cover a lot of distance today" days and we will be quite a bit south of Lewiston on inter-state 84.

Frank,

Have a safe and fun trip. If you get lost and pass through east Alabama, be sure and let me know, I would love to buy you a coffee.

Wow, that's going to be a great trip, Frank! We did just NM and AZ a couple years ago...your tour looks wonderful!

Frank! I know in a previous post you mentioned you had never been to Wisconsin.

It must have been a slip up with the itinerary to have not included the Badger state in your journey. Spring and myself, as well as a few others here, could probably be persuaded to give you a pick-em-up truck escort. ;) :D

Enjoy your trip. You are going to some of the places I've not been, but would like to see. Take pics please.

Safe Journey. :)

Any US citizen that is 62 can purchase a Golden Age Card for a National park for $10. Allows entrance to any National Park for you and anyone else in the car. Oh-- it is a lifetime card-- Frank, I know you live in Canada-- :) have a great safe trip! If you can - go to Page, Arizona, North of Grand Canyon, and tour the Slot Canyons-- Well worth the cost!

Jerry, I am confused about why you gave me this advise. Is it that half way through giving it, you realized that I am a Canadian and so ineligable? I have had annual US National Park passes in the past and will probably purchase one again for this trip.

Thanks, but we can't fit the region north of the canyon into this trip.

In your Seattle to Boise get-it-done-in-one-day trip, may I suggest a brief stop at the Baker City Oregon Trail Interpretive Center just off of I-84. It is a very interesting hour-or-two respite from the I-84 fast-track......lots of Oregon Trail history.....and run by the Bureau of Land Management. Good stuff.

I live in Baker City.......a small town in northeast Oregon. Nice town, if I do say so myself. Not trying to sound like the Chamber of Commerce, but this is a unique area of the Northwest.

My oldest son is stationed in the Coast Guard and drives down from Seattle quite often....it takes around 7 hours from there to BC. We are about an hour and a half from Boise.

Look me up if you are in the area.....we'll talk a little WWing and I'll show you my shop. I'm in the local phone book or you can PM me.

In any case, have fun with your trip and stay safe.

Sounds like your going to have fun Frank. I am originally from Vancouver Washington & you will pass by exit 230 to where I live now on Whidbey Island on I-5 on your way back & forth to Seattle.

I just wonder since you going on tour...will they say Frank is in the buillding when you arrive.

Wow shades of Elvis. Just put your shades on & know one will know the difference.

Hi, I am reporting in from Sandy Utah.

Thanks for the tip Arnie. We did stop at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and were there for the last 2 hours before they closed. It is very very well run and freindly and we learned a lot. There was not really enough time to spend any with you, but I appreciate the invitation. Maybe there will be a next time.

This was about my 15th trip to Salt Lake City but I had never bothered to go to Temple Square before. It was Margaret's first trip to Salt Lake City and she dragged me there. I found quite a bit that was historically interesting and would recommend a visit even to non-believers such as myself.

Bart, Margaret and know Whidbey Island having spent close to two weeks there on lots of visits while lived in Seattle. You live in one of the great parts of the world!

Nice trip Frank :) If you are near the Hoover/Boulder dam, do take the time to tour it. The size of it is mind boggling. Where else can you say that you have been litterly "in" Arizona or Nevada when they take you into the tunnels that have the large pipes that supply water to the turbines

Do have fun, the only place missing is Yellowstone Park - maybe next time

We are home and happy to report that we had a fantastic vacation!

-We drove through portions of 1 province and 9 states. In outbound order these were: British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California.

-All of these places have a lot of very empty and very beautiful land. We avoided cities quite successfully.

-We logged slightly more than 8000 kilometres (5000 miles) on the car, about 400 miles by bus, and about 150 miles by train.

-We visited 8 US National Parks and I don't know how many National Monuments and State Parks.

-We visited at least 20 museums.

-We visited old friends in 4 places.

-People everywhere were friendly and we made some new friends.

-I took about 1200 pictures.

-Margaret and I are very lucky and, for us, life is good!

Thanks for the tip Ken. We did drive over the Hoover dam but it was much much too busy there at the time for us to stop. We attempted to avoid crowded places on our vacation and, for the most part, we managed to do so.

It's good to have your smiling face back on the pages of SMC. Glad you had a good trip.

I'm very partial to those western states. One of these years I really want to explore the central portion of Canada.

I'd really like to catch that "Noon Balloon From Saskatoon". ;) :D
