View Full Version : So, a really nice SPEAR dovetail saw?

I'm not trying to gloat too hard, but if I had a nicely handled back saw with about 21 PPI, 8" blade, stamped with SPEAR CAST STEEL, how much restoration should I attempt?

I'm still working on my other two finds.

Thanks, Dan

I haven't started cleaning it yet.

If the toothline is straight, it should make a good saw. There is some pitting, but you can get away with a little bit of that on a dovetail saw.

If it turns out to be worse pitting than it looks, you can always slip another sawplate in it for $25 or so, and it should still be a good saw. I replaced the sawplate on a nurse saw an inch longer than that and it is a nice saw to use.

I don't think the blade will be unusable, but I was hoping to learn what the value of a saw of this age might be. I am working on cleaning it and will post some photos when I am done. I'm kind of surprised that there is so little information on Spear saws on the net. I know he formed Spears and Jackson which went on for many years as a major saw maker, so I would think that his early saws would at least be considered uncommon.

Thanks, Dan
