Going to the gulf in a few weeks, not my kind of vacation (I'm the husband not the management as I often say). what are the odds of finding some turning store or activity there?

Not sure of a turning store, but when you get hungry, Lambert's Cafe in Foley is great. Home of the throwed rolls.

The ferry between Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan is a pleasant ride. Shortcut across the south end of Mobile Bay.
Pelicans are all over the place.

Fireworks are available all over the eastern side of the bay.

Touring the battle ship and submarine at Mobile is really cool.

We just returned from there. I didn't find any woodworking stores. But there was plenty other places to go see. We are going back next March and hope to bring my lathe or mill to keep occupied with some project(miniature). Make sure you bring your bikes if you go to the state park. Very nice trails. Paved.

Mobile isn't far from there. We took a tour of the battleship Alabama which was interesting (as Myk mentioned). Lots of golf courses in the area if you are in to that or, if interested, go on a charter fishing boat and fish the Gulf.
