Here's my first completed piece following the week at John Campbell with Dixie Biggs.
This is square sapelle bowl with a maple lid that I've had for some time, and always wanted to add something to the lid. It was a little too thin to get very deep with the relief, but I'm pleased with results. Practice practice practice!
Carved, burned and finished with danish oil. Approx 7" across.
C&C welcome.

Beautiful carving, Tim.. The top views are excellent, but are the wings supposed to be suspended? ........ Jerry (in Tucson)

Excellent addition to an already nice piece! I do think I would have liked the piece better suspended on the wings, but that is just my opinion - it is a very well done piece, with crisp and nicely executed carving.

The wings suspended was a bit of an oops compared to some other winged pieces I've done. After seeing that it had a nice wobble and was balanced...I kind of enjoyed it and may do it on purpose next time!;)

Wow, now that's a super piece! The carving works perfectly with it. I bet it looks really cool with the wobble.

Tim,
That's a fine turning and a wonderful embellishment. The carving is clean and the design wonderful. My congratulations.

Wow! That's one of the nicest pieces I've seen in a while. It would be beautiful without the carving but the carving just takes it to another level!

Very nice, Tim! I really like the side view. The carving is cool, especially with the contrasting lid. I'm gonna have to try one of these soon...

Excellent piece Tim. It appears you were paying attention in class. Until now I hadn't given much thought to carving but your results got me interested. We need to get together for a demo.

Thanks to all of you for the encouraging comments. This was something I had looked forward to for over half a year after starting to discover work done by not just Dixie Biggs, but the likes of Jacques Vesery, Derek Weidman and others. It's kind of a 'sub-vortex' that spins at 30K rpm much of the time. The irony is that it's best done on woods that don't have much going on that would take away from the carving...and I've typically avoided those woods! I think I need a bigger wood shed.;)

The other positive on carving and other treatments is that it lends itself to doing it outdoors, sitting on a deck or porch vs standing in one place. It's a nice break from standing in one place for long stretches.
