Woodturning in San Diego?

It looks like I may have most of a free day tomorrow in San Diego. Are there any things of interest from a woodturning perspective that I should see? The last time I had a free day here I drove up to Sam Maloof's shop/house and that was a real treat. Appreciate any suggestions. Cheers.

Not sure how far it is but you should definitely look into the Gambel house built by Green & Green.

Gamble House is in Pasadena, about 130 miles from San Diego. I have been hearing about the building of an old-style sailing ship called the "San Salvadore". It is near the San Diego airport, in an area called "Spanish Landing".

Thanks for the suggestions. I have read about the Gamble house and would love to see it but that might be a stretch geographically. I was not aware of the shipbuilding site and will try to give that a visit. I toured the Enterprise on my last visit - nothing todo with woodworking but was well worth the time. Will make quite a contrast with the San Salvadore! Cheers, Dave

I was in San Diego recently for a few days and visited Tom Edward's studio/gallery in the Spanish Village in Balboa Park. Also, the San Diego Woodturners, an AAW Chapter, meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month. The club's web address is: http://www.sdwt.org.

Bill,
I took Brian's suggestion and visited the San Salvadore site. Had an interesting chat with the blacksmith and with one of the crew working on constructing the ship. It costs $5 to get in, has a few exhibits but mostly it's interesting to see the ship construction. Not any turning that I saw but interesting nevertheless. In my earlier note I mentioned visiting the aircraft carrier (I said Enterprise but meant Midway). The midway and the San Salvadore are on opposite ends of N. Harbor Dr, the road that goes by the airport but both are easy to find. I recommend both. Didn't have a chance to visit Edward's studio but will try to give that a go on the next visit. Balboa Park is a great place to wander around in general. Cheers, Dave229444
