Not sure why, but I'm really liking inlay projects - or is it pseudo-inlay for what I'm doing?

Interesting project, Mike, but what exactly are we seeing? Is there another layer in between or is that the reflection of the back of the top layer? Either way, I'd paint the reflected layer. It's a pretty nice serving tray, though, perfect for parties. You could also put a clear glass layer over the whole inside thing to make it easier to clean.

cheers, dee

I'm with Dee. I can't tell what exactly I am looking at. It appears there is a reflection in the mirror of the underside of the wood, but it also looks like you may have a few layers of wood on top of the mirror? Can you describe in a little more detail what we are looking at? Are the colors painted on to create your pseudo-inlay?

The mirror is attached to the tray, while the layer of wood with the decorative floral pattern is spaced about 1/2" up (why you see behind it)

My wife suggested no gap... I wanted to make it flush with the top of the tray

The flowers/vines are Ash veneer, painted with metallic paints

The wood is stained with pecan miniwax stain
