I've dragged this old board from Arkansas to Georgia, to Texas, to Oklahoma, and back to Texas. I never found a use for it. It was 2" thick, 17" wide and a little over 8ft. long. I got it in the 70's at my first woodworking job. They told me it had been laying around the shop for 30+ years back then, and called it "Boat Cypress". I don't know why except that it was clear. Anyway, I cut the end off of it to see how it turn. It's only passable as a turning wood. sooo soft. 16 1/2" dia x 2" tall. It's something that you should be able to wash with water.

Deane, thanks for posting the story of your board. I always get a kick out of what creekers do for wood.

Deane,

Nice platter, and it is soft wood. I had a 1x10 - 10' long left over from a project about 5 years ago. I had previously made a plate out of some scrap that I had to cut out the pith center and glue the 2 pieces together. I cut the 10' board down for my move and have turned one piece that I applied a couple of coats of Grapeseed Oil as a food finish to give a more balanced finish look. It is still washable and can have oil applied again with use. You might try that on a future piece.
