Here is a mixture of closed segments and open segments. Curly Maple and Cherry. Ten inches in diameter and four inches tall. 30 Segments per ring and a solid bottom for a total of 391 pieces.

These solid rings were glued up in a single step, not the half ring method. I find it well worth the effort it takes to get my miter guage accurately adjusted before cutting my segments.

What ya think?

Bill, even though I imagine that the open parts are more difficult, it is the faceted beauty of the solid rings that just sends me. Beautiful piece and thank you for showing it.

Bill, this is an excellent piece!! However, we HAVE to get you doing better pictures so we can fully enjoy your work!:D

I took a shot at reworking the image, but there wasn't enough there to get it fully corrected. Hope you don't mind - thought others might be able to better enjoy seeing it.

I see us Bill's think alike. Very well done! A wonderful shape and patterns as well as a nice choice of woods. Obviuosly you've fallen and can't get out (of the segmenting vortex) I look forward to seeing more from you.

Beautiful design. I was going to tease you about being inspired by a case of the "blues" but JK went and cured them for you. Very pretty pattern. I can't believe you can be that accurate over so many cuts. Great work.

Well I have to admit John's picture sure looks better than mine. I know I'm not doing well in the photographic department, for some reason I can't get this technique down. Some of my pictures look better than others. All I do is point and click -- maybe I need to upgrade my equipment.

very pretty featureband design. I agree with you about your method. I too cut it right the first time. I've always figured it's easier to do it right once, than try to sand it to fit later. If one chooses the sanding, one is just throwing in another variable. If one can sand it to fit, why not cut to fit? Once you get into 24-32-36 pieces per row and a fancy design the half method or sanding pieces to the right size, throws the design off.

Bill,
This is a great looking piece. I like open Seg pieces and this has a great look to it. Well Done!

Very nice Bill. I like the open segments on this piece. If I had a saw that would cut segments that accurately I would try one for sure.
