Most hand woodworkers are familiar with the Stanley #98 and #99 side rabbet planes like the one pictured below.

These can be useful little tools. At a recent sale I stumbled upon a wood and steel, likely user made, equivalent:

The steel plate is attached to a mahogany body with some screws:

And the iron is held in with a boxwood wedge:

I would think this is a model which could be copied by the many accomplished plane-makers on the creek. Of course, you need to make a pair :):

I had a lovely little one of those in my instrument shop. It belonged to the museum. It was double sided, and about 2" wide. Had a beechwood body and a 1/16" steel sole. It had hardly been used,if at all. The body itself was only a bit over 3/4" wide.

So did you buy them or just take some pictures?

My #98 & 99 see regular use.

Bought them. They are proud members of my tool kit now. I like the #98 and #99 too. But these are too neat to pass up.

Cute. But that loose bit of blade looks terribly floppy to me.

Nice find Mark. How do you find the shape when in the hand.

Stewie, I find them easier to grip than the Stanleys. If I were to build my own version, I would likely round over the back edge a little more and create something of a tear drop profile. I posted the pictures because I thought some of the folks here who build planes could do something similar with the basic design but add their own flair to it.

I've seen a fair number of such planes, and am always tempted to buy, especially when the wood is boxwood; but haven't yet, keep telling myself I should make a couple instead and pick up the 79. :)
