My wife is cleaning out pictures today and came across this one which I'd never seen before. It's a picture that my dad took while I was working on the lathe. Aproximately 1980 vintage. The lathe consisted of two poplar rails, two pillow block bearings mounted on poplar blocks for the head stock and two for the tail stock. The tail stock had a piece of threaded rod through the two pillow blocks and was hand pointed on the end for a center. The head stock was a piece of 1" shaft that I had drilled and tapped for 1/2-20 threads because I had a 1/2" drill chuck that had those threads. The other end was turned to 3/4" I think - could have been 1/2" though. I mounted a step pulley on that end and drove the lathe from a pulley on my radial arm saw (shown in back of the lathe.

Ed, you haven't changed a bit!! Interesting that you have held your interest in making your lathes all these years. I am pretty sure I would have long since lost that zeal.

Neat pic!

I think your current lathe is an amazing contraption...........you must be quite the fabricator of things spinny........that first lathe in the pic was just the beginning, eh?!

All part of your long term plans, right Ed. That was just the initial prototype on the way to your latest and I might add fantastic machine.

Ed, based on the above comments, I started searching for a picture of your current homemade lathe. Could you direct me to one?

Thanks,

Brian

That's a super cool picture Ed, and certainly a big difference between the first one and your current one. I think your lathe is amazing. I'm with John, I would have lost my motivation long ago for building my own. Your's is a work of art, that makes art.
