Hello,

I recently acquired a used delta two spindle horizontal boring machine, which I will be using reinforce cope/stick joints in interior doors. The problem I am having is finding 10mm shank bits that are long enough to drill for a 4-5" dowel (2-3" of drilling depth). Can anyone recommend a source for bits?

Thanks!!

congrats on the purchase of the bore machine, if you are unable to buy the bits, maybe a machine shop will turn the shank to 10 mm

Morris Tool (http://www.morriswoodtool.com/10mm-Drill-Bits.htm) has 10mm drills up to 50mm (appx 2") cutting length. BTW, they also have 10mm shaft boring bits in all kinds of interesting sizes.

Thanks,

That is what I am running up against, 77mm being the longest bit that I can find in the appropriate size of 13mm. This bit unfortunately will not bore quite deep enough. I am hoping to find something longer, but perhaps turning the bit will be the best option. Thanks for the help.

Jason, how about this. (http://routerbitworld.com/Amana-203013-13MM-BORING-BIT-90MM-OVERALL-p/amana%20203013.htm)

Jason, another way would be to weld a shaft to the drill bits

David, thanks, that just might work. I also finally found some 105mm bits from FS tool that may work. I appreciate the help.

Thanks!!

Jason, I've made a lot of doors on a 3 head machine at work, so I have a sense of what the needs are as far as length of dowels for passage doors. I couldn't fine any 13mm bits with 10mm shanks in the length required for that application. But there are good long metric bits like these available........http://www.traditionalwoodworker.com/130-mm-HSS-Lipped-Brad-Point-Drill-Bit-Made-in-Germany/productinfo/403%2D4130/.

Maybe the best solution is to buy a 13mm bit with a 13mm shank and have it turned down at a machine shop or tool and die maker. My local tooling place does this sort of thing reasonably, I'm sure some one like Morris Wood tool would too. Perhaps you can find the other set of adapters for those heads to use different size drill shanks? I think they had several adapters available?

These are the bits I use in my Delta horizontal boring machine. Remove the 10mm chucks & thread the bits in their place.

AHA!!! - Thanks Chris, that is what I was looking for. Thanks everyone else for the input.

Peter, curious how long a dowel you like to use for 1 3/4" thick interior doors?

Thanks
