View Full Version : Delicate Stress (or Ken Hill's contribution to my nerves!)

Here is my 2nd full form since the carpal tunnel surgery. I was gifted this Oak burl from Ken Hill and finally got around to making something from it. The cup portion was a bit stressfull, from the flying wing to the massive inclusion in the side. But it all worked out.

Thinned to about 1/16" then tapering thicker at the stem.

8 3/4" tall x 2 1/2" on the main part of the cup.

Oak burl and African blackwood (luckly had a bit of brown in the blank)

Comments and critiques are always encouraged. Thanks

Scott that's a very attractive piece. I like the wing on it. Doesn't look like the surgery set you back any!

That is very impressive. I believe that you took this wood as far as it could go. I really like this!

Looks like a winner to me. Very graceful and the fact it appears so thin and could have come apart is impressive.

Well, that's "rather nice", Scott! It looks like it took some doing to keep it together. I like the "wing" and am pleased to hear you still have all of your knuckles intact!

Scott,

That is really nice, I like it but It might sound strange is the base is my favorite. I like how flat it is and I like the way you transitioned from the blackwood to to the oak. Nicely done.

Scott, this is one of my favorites of the work you have done!! Must be the "new hands." Really nice form in the cup, great planning with the flare, and the stem is very well proportioned to the base and cup.

Back in full swing, you certainly haven't lost a thing after the surgery. A very graceful form and it even made it to the end:eek:. Another fantastic turning, Scott. I take it you must have wrapped it while turning the inside?

There are not enough pictures!!! I'd say you are back in the saddle young man! Well done and do not let anyone tell you different! I'm really drawn to the flat'ish base, wider is cool in this case. Guessing there was some tape involved at some point? Maybe not.

Thanks for the nice words, everyone.

Yes the tape was bought out for the cup. I "discovered" the inclusion after shaping the outside and was very concerned with exploding this while thinning it down. :) The tape helped with that worry but that propeller of a wing was crazy weird, flapping around!

Good job on this Scott..........glad you are back at the lathe. Nice work on the natural edge and flare......I suspect a little finesse was called for on that one!

Great job on the flare Scott. Both base and finial design flow upward to it very well!

Very nice Scott! Looks like it was turned on a wing and a prayer . Nice job on the base too, I like how thin it is.

Glad you're back, Scott. Hope this was pain-free. It's a wonderful piece, as I've come to expect from you. I like the base, too, but I'm impressed with the wing. Couldn't help but note the file name on the image.

Scott that is beautiful. Love the colors in both pieces of wood. Sorry we did not get to stop by on our way home. Would love to see some of your work. Maybe next year. Keep up the great work

Scott,
I think I need carpel tunnel surgery, if it results in forms like this. I agree with others, this is, I think, one of your best works. Great tool control and great form on the vessel and the pedestal also. A Very Well Done.
