I have a friend interested in making his own cutting tools and is trying to find a source for solid steel stock. Locally, no one seems to have a clue on were to buy high speed steel stock, sized preferably 1 1/2" wide, 3/8 to 1/2" thick and lengths can be variable, but must be at least 18" long.

Anyone done this and know a source?

Thanks

Scott,
Depending on what you are looking for, Enco has good prices on drill rod, and I have had good luck with ASAP (though note their shipping upcharge for longer lengths.)

Try Metal by the foot and others in town. None know where to get it. Basically my friend wants to make his on scrapers for the lathe and other lathe tools. Needs good steel otherwise it will need to be sharpened way too much.
