Band saw speed

Having recently purchased my first band saw, I have a question: Under what circumstances would I want to change the speed on the saw? My Grizz G0555 has two speeds (3400 and 1700, I believe). It comes set up on the fast speed. When or why would I want to change it to the slow speed? Re-sawing large boards?

for wood use the 3400 rpm

Definitely faster for wood. I don't know why they do that, I sure wouldn't want to cut metal on a WW power tool. Sparks and wood dust, bad mixture.
