Roofing Felt (Tar Paper)

Can anyone explain how to use the white (silver?) lines that are on felt paper? They are unevenly spaced but one would think they would be there to help align the shingles properly.

The lines on roofing felt are there to aid in the installation/ overlap of the felt. They are not there for helping layout shingles.
