Been playing around with this suspended winged bowl, had a couple of design opportunities :D:D.This is what I ended up with. It's African mahogany, 6" x 13 1/2" x 1 7/8" and finished with 2 coats of AO.

Roland, this one is very nice! Love the wood, and the concept is a different take on this type of turning. Lots of hand work on this one, too. Excellent piece - despite the design opportunities.

Beautiful Roland. Love the grain in the mahogany. Bet that sounded like an airplane propeller on the lathe.

Roland that is a real beauty. Extremely creative form. I always like seeing turnings where someone has the nerve to take an already beautiful piece and start cutting it up. In the end, it makes it even better. Nice job.

I really like this Roland! Spider would work for a name too. Suspensions aren't easy and carving is for others...like you! Finish came out fantastic and the form is well done!

It does have a bit of a "crustacean" like quality. In profile view, this is a very sweet suspended box that bears no resemblance to any crustacean I know.

Thanks for all the comments everybody. This was certainly an "outside the box" turning for me. I found it rather difficult to envision the processes to get from point A to point B, C...... :). Truth be told, my aim was to have more spread on the legs, wanted 5"-5 1/2" and ended up with 4", sound familiar to anybody?:D
learnednt a few things in the process, so it was time well spent. There are way too many things I want to try and learn, the days just aren't long enough:mad:
DD, thank god I've never come across a crustacean that looks like this either:eek:, a radioactive crab?
John, there was a little more hand work in this thanarthriticitic hands cared for, can't do this daily for sure.
Jim, my first impression was a spider also, but seems like "crab" was the most stated impressions from fellow "Mainers", go figure:)

Thanks again!

Nothing to crab about this one.... except for the form, which reminds me of a crab. Very well done, great finish and great creativity on the form.

Roland,

I have never been much of a fan of winged bowls, but I really like this one. It is such a fresh twist on an old idea.

Well Done,

Alan

Roland, that's not just clever...it's very clever. It flows well, and the finish is just what I like! Sweet!
Just as an aside, as it doesn't need one...but these little forms take small lids very nicely and can be an accent point on their own...but not necessary.
