Recently completed using quarter-sawn Red Oak. Desin features re patterend after a tall chest by Darrell Peart. Finish is pecan oil-based stain and varnish.

The second bedroom suite is identical in design but features Walnut frame and top with QSRO drawers and side panels. This set also includes a king-sized bed. I will finish rubbing these piecces out in the next week or so and them post. Comments/suggestions/questions are welcomed.

Very nice...There's a lot of dove tails....Hand or machine. Either way they took awhile....Looks great...I like QSO.

Very nice. Love the exposed joinery on the drawers as well as the pulls.

Uhh.. I don't think those are dove tails. Aren't they box joints?

Making those decorative box joints is a lot of work.

Did you do them by machine?

Very nice - did you construct the tops so that the expansion of the ends is toward the back? I'm not sure it matters much, but that comes to mind. All in all, nice stuff.

You're right they are proud box or finger joints. They were cut on the table saw with a dado and jig. Darrell Peart has a section in his book on design elements that discusses these joints although I changed the sequencing of the joints and so I could add the square pegs to cover the screws.

No, the top can expend in either direction. The center 4" are glued. There is 1.5" spline, divided equally, and the spline is slotted several inches from each end with a 5/8 x 1/4 slot through which 1/4 oak dowels are inserted from the underside to allow for expansion. The spline is glued into the breadboard ends.

Those are incredibly interesting pieces! Darrell's a good mentor to follow, too.
