Stu, do you know who this maker is? I didn't pay close enough attention, maybe, but I gather this is in Miki.

I know there's lots of makers in miki, but only two that I know of that are available over here (tsunesaburo and yamamoto).

Any clue who the dai maker is? His fingers look like a younger version of inomotos (i.e., it looks like parts of one or some are missing).

5:30 or so is where the important stuff in the video starts.

I'd like to have that wet wheel in my shop!

Ts...Tsu...nevermind. I'm not telling you :D

I figured it might be Tsunesaburo, either tsunesaburo or yamamoto, but I assumed yamamoto would be a smaller operation, and probably cheaper than (yen)61,250 for the plane that was shown (though you never know when you can't understand what's in the iron to begin with because of the language barrier).

Thanks Sam.

That plane is their "Meigo ryoumou (迷悟両忘)", according to Tsunesaburo's online catalog, that's mokume Blue super blade. Second row far left (http://www.tsune36.co.jp/item_01.html)

I'll take a stab.

Tsunesaburo.

(They told me to watch this a month or so ago.)

Just getting my bet in before I watch it.

Mr. Uozumi.

And what Sam said.

Umm. Yeah.

Dai maker is... I'm not sure. Looks like the guy who's usually at shows in Miki, tweaking stuff and works with Tsunesaburo often. Can't see his face, but the stump (wood one!) and the tools look familiar.

On the sparky grinders, Mr. Tsunesaburo (Uozumi-san) the 3rd is on the one at the back. Younger fellow is *I think* Mr. Tsunesaburo the 4th...

(He also engraves blades with nice patterns. Good at it too.)

Just for interest, this years national planing contest will be in Ehime, which is maybe 1 hour's drive away from me here.

(I think we'll be having visitors here at home...)

Stu.

Well, I didn't find it looking for planes.

I was actually typing stuff in google translate trying to find a picture of someone ripping a reasonably long board with a ryoba, in earnest - i.e., at speed (not a hobbyist hacking around at it).

But when you put things like "sawing a board" in google translate and then paste the results in youtube, you never know what you're going to get. I didn't get what I wanted, but the last 5 minutes of this was interesting enough I guess.

Something else interesting that I came across (again, having not found the rip that I was looking for):

Yari-kanna users, competent ones. You'll see these in catalogs if you get them in catalogs, but I haven't seen much in terms of folks using them competently, and I figured that they would be more commonly used by temple builders to put a finish surface on something that needs to be shiny but not necessarily flat. (as in, I have no intention of buying one and learning to use it). Maybe i'm wrong about that, who knows?

I do think it's interesting to watch them being used competently, though.
