for newbies like me: If you want a 5" bowl, start with a 10" blank! DAMHIKT!

heh heh.....One day, after making a bat, I found myself up to my knees in shavings.

I didn't start out intending to make a bat.

I was goofing one day and ended up with a toothpick. Never found the candlestick I was making.

The problem is when you have a lathe that can only handle 11" diameter stock, you can't even plan ahead and start out with enough wood to get a 10" diameter bowl.

Carole, isn't that part of the fun?..I have done that as well..many times.

At least you get a 5" bowl from a 10" blank!!!! ;)

I made a nice little bowl today. I swept the pieces under the bench a bout 30 seconds before it was done.

Then I made a box from a piece of cherry burl. Skew practice was OK, Making th4e tenon shortened it a good bit and screweed up the grain match.

But it looks good, except for the hole in the bottom where I parted it too high....

ROFL! You didn't say any bad words did you, Robert? I'm sure as I get more into this turning that I will do similar things. I am off to Woodcraft in VA Beach tomorrow to take a bowl turning class. So far I am self-taught, but I figure I better get some instruction before I teach myself all the wrong things!:D

Well, Dennis, come to think of it, I suppose should be grateful that I ended up with a bowl of ANY size from a 10" blank! :)

I've made my share of funnels as well. The trick is always make sure the inside isn't bigger than the outside.
