While on vacation in Idaho this summer I traded some wood with Brian Brown. He received some Mesquite, Olive, African Sumac, and Desert Ironwood. I got some Box Elder burl, Russian Olive, and Osage Orange. This piece was turned using one of the Box Elder Burl chunks I received in the trade.

It's 7 1/4" diameter. 8" tall, and is less than 1/4" thick throughout. It was hollowed through a 1 1/8" hole with the intention of retaining as much natural edge as possible. The bottom was left round so I will be making a small stand for it to sit in for display.

Thanks to Brian for the trade, I think I probably got the better end of the trade.

Very nice Jason! You did that odd shaped piece of BEB proud. I like the form, and I especially like the natural edge opening. That tree was full of areas that make for interesting natural edge openings. You may think you got the best end of the trade, but I think I did. I guess we always like the woods that are not available to us easily. I'm working on something to make with that african sumac. The cracks make me nervous, but I really like the color.

Here's a slightly better photo from a makeshift photo booth I setup this afternoon. I'm not sure about the base, I think the diameter may be a little too large.

Super nice Jason! I love boxelder burl! Could do without the barnyard smell, that seems to go with it though :) Beautiful job on this piece!

Love the piece, the base not so much. The base looks like it is part of the burl HF. Perhaps go with something smaller and in a contrasting color, ebony or something else dark? Just my 2 pennies.
