If you are interested in building your own marking gauges, I’ve just posted a blog entry and a video on YouTube. Feel free to check it out. This one is made from Osage Orange and Cocobolo.

OK, but this is not Matt's design, it's a Japanese keshiki design. At least you hold it correctly in use.

Thanks for the video, Steve! Any reason why the brass screw is situated on the bottom versus the top of the gauge?

Maurice,

I'm not Steve, but I can answer your question. The screw is on the bottom because I always found that when the screw was on top it was in the way of my fingers and hand. It was just plain uncomfortable. Now it's not in the way.

Thanks Matt - personal preference, right?

Yes. It's a personal preference. You can put it on the top, the bottom, or one of the sides if you'd like.

Looks great. I like the contrasting wood, it's a cool look. The pretty contrasting wood also makes the glue up worth it - otherwise I'd just chop a mortise and have the thing done quicker!

I'll have to give this style a go - I've made a couple "french style" gauges, and a wedge-lock panel gauge. I'm thinking this style is more what I'd like.

Looks great, though.

Look at what you made me do. I was meaning to make a cutting type and a pencil marking gauge your post triggered me into action. I had previously made a marking gauge with a short fence/block and didn't like it much. The Japanese style wider guide always looked more practical. The test run confirms that these are less subject to user error. Woods are Walnut and Ash. One of the gauges has a tightening screw built through an idea Derek showed on his site. The other one still has a temporary screw.

Nice work Zahid - looks great. I like the pencil idea too. I may have a go at a double bar for mortise layout...someday.
