Made a couple of bottle stoppers for the kids at Christmas. My son said that he used one for vinegrette and said that the "chrome tip got all crystallized and pitted".

Can't remember what kind they were (LV perhaps) but is this normal? Is the vinegar to harsh for them?

Thanks.

Chrome is alright for stoppers but will pit. I would go with Stainless from Ruth Niles. They will last.

Acid in any liquid will eat at a metallic plated finish. I had a few gold plated brass tear-drop styles that turned green from oxidation. +1 on Donny's suggestion.

Thanks, kind of thought that might be the case. Buy cheap, you sometime you get cheap results! I've heard a lot about Ruth's bottle stoppers, but you know, these were "right there" when I had the urge to try one...

Another Ruth Niles bottle stopper fan and yet....I think I recently saw someone else offering stainless steel bottlestoppers of a different design.

Craft Supplies USA has stainless steel bottle stoppers that are top quality: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Projects___Bottle_Stoppers___Stainless_Steel_Bottl e_Stopper___stainless_stoppers?Args=

The thing I like about Ruth's stoppers is they not only work, but they look better than the chrome ones. They are a bit smaller than the chrome ones and fit the bottles better.

+1 for Ruth Niles stoppers. They fit better than others, and don't make the stopper sit way off the bottle like some other stoppers do--letting the stopper be the focal point, not the shiny metal cone.

I like the stainless steel droplet stopper from CSUSA. It may just be in my head, but I feel the extra weight down low helps keep everything in the bottle well.

Generally a Google search of the name will get you to a turners website. http://torne-lignum.com/

I can never remember her page for some reason, but if you Google Ruth Niles it should come up. I've also noticed that my local Rockler is carrying her stoppers, but they're cheaper direct from her.
