When Mike Ash came out to visit, he gifted me a spectacular piece of Redwood Burl. I didn't want to waste any of it, so shaped the outside and cored it. Typically, I would flatten the face before coring but, as you can see, I would have lost a significant amount of wood. This was a bit of a tough core for me as I started with having to cut air in two different sections. Once into solid wood, though, it was an easy core. This is, also, the thinnest bowl I've made and, as you can see from the rim, is made for display, not use, as the rim is angled out instead of in. The core will probably end up being a HF, not sure about that yet. Dry sanded to 320, soaked with Doctors Walnut Oil and the first of three coats of AO. I believe it was Bob Bergstrom who said he made his bases look as if they ran through the foot, so gave that a shot too. Bowl is 10.5"x5.5". Thanks Mike for you unbelievable generosity. Comments a criticism appreciated.

Outstanding! You really nailed that Nate, I like how the rim curves in, showcasing that beautiful wood. Haven't turned redwood yet...looking forward to it.

Really nice, Nate. My favorite view is the one showing the bottom. It really shows off the profile and the wood figure well. I love redwood burl but it's very hard to find pieces like that.

Nate,

That is a really nice bowl. I love the wood. The only redwood burl that I have ever turned was pretty punky stuff. You did a great job.

Been away from the computor a few days, but I'm absolutely thrilled to see what Nate's created here. Beautiful!!!!! Especially like the foot you've spun.

And ...... this piece of redwood burl couldn't have gone to a more deserving turner!! Thanks for your service Nate.

Well used piece of burl. It's so easy to waste a good chunk by making the wrong decision about how to orient it. You did a great job with this one. I think burl makes spectacular NE bowls.

I love that Red Wood burl! Great grain and color. I like the beaded foot, very classy. Be careful absentmindedly eating popcorn out of that one - it might bite!
