This is probably just another person who has no idea how much a scroll saw should cost, or they saw the price on a really high end scroll saw and figured they could get 1/4 the price of a really high end scroll saw for their unit.

Most scroll saws cost nowhere near $600, but I have seen some high end scroll saws that cost that much or more. (I was surprised to see that the Dewalt scroll saw I bought used a number of years back sells for nearly $500 new!)

I'd like to show you my version of the e-trade baby's shocked face but I'm not really shocked. I've found a few good deals on CL but the thing is over populated with morons. That's a pretty bad one.

Come on guys, it's a vintage scroll saw, none of that primary coloured plastic machinery here!

It must be worth a lot of money, just look at how carefully stored and displayed it is.:D

Regards, Rod.

From what I see on CL around here,,,,,that's more than typical of the used equipment available.

Buying used is a complete waste of time and money.

Better to buy new from HF.

Now I know how to photograph my tools for Craigslist if I want them to get global attention and be posted on wood forums around the world.

Guess you better not look around my shop. All my major tools are used from Craigslist except for my recent bandsaw. I wouldn't have the caliber of tools I have if I had bought any other way. One example: 5hp single phase left-tilt Unisaw with 52" Biessy fence, three quality blades and a Leitz dado set, plus a Jess-Em lift with the big Porter-Cable router in the extension table for $900. That simply doesn't happen anywhere except Craigslist or a VERY VERY lucky matchup on an estate sale.

Sorry - I stick 100% firm by my statement. If all that was available in the used market in your area was overpriced junk - just like the OP posted, you guys would sing a far different tune.Just be thankful you can find decent used equipment in your area @ a realistic price. In my area - it just doesn't happen. For instance - similar tools to what Myk posted would run a few thousand dollars bought used on CL in my area.Hardly a bargin.

Rich;

I use Searchtempest to look for items. I regularly expand the search distance as far as PA, KY, and WI. from Mi. I always see some great machine deals in your neck of the woods. Sure, much of it is Grizzly, and other Asian stuff, but the amount of good iron machines, for garage sale prices in your area is not exactly trivial.
All it takes is a willingness to tear something apart, and fix what needs fixing. Some don't have the time, inclination, ability to do it. But that's OK. Leaves more for myself and the other bottom-feeders. :)
If American Pickers had an interest in machinery, all bets would be off.

Myk,
I'll try Searchtempest and see how that pans out.
I'm ok with Grizzly if the price is right. From what I've seen so far though, Grizzly is considered "top shelf" here and priced accordingly.

BTW, a typical price for a DeWalt RAS around here - when they do pop up - is between $600 and $800.

More typical is the current CL ad for a Ryobi biscuit jointer. (not that i want it - but - just to illustrate whatt I come up against all the time)
The seller is asking $130.00 for it.
How can you even begin to bargin on something like that?
A "fair price" for that item would be ~ $45.00 since they currently sell brand new at Home Depot for $99.00!

There are two distinct Craigslist populations; primary sellers and bottom feeders.

Geography seems to greatly affect the relative proportions of these two groups.
Cities in decline are fertile hunting ground for the scrappers and "resellers" - those least likely to have realistic valuations.

There are those that crawl around CL looking for something similar to what they want to sell. They see something like that scroll saw, and figure theirs' is in better condition, so price it accordingly.
It's up to bottom feeders like me to bring them back to earth. That one is worth $40, MAX.

A tip or 2 on Searchtempest.
Use search terms like +delta +scroll or +hitachi +miter
Being creative also helps, like; +radio +alarm or +radio +saw
