If you enjoy reading about the "why" as much as the "how", consider George Nakashima's Soul of a Tree and Thos Moser's Thos. Moser Artistry in Wood. Both books have been very meaningful to me.

Taunton has a book called the something like "The complete guide to furniture and cabinet making" I found it very informative.
