I cored these mesquite bowls on Saturday. It was too late to take pics Saturday night, and on Sunday afternoon I was shocked to see a crack  in the rim of the big bowl, a 1st in all the mesquite I've turned. The crack was about 3/4" long and was gapped open, so I held off on taking pics to see if it was going to get any worse. To my further surprise, when I checked it on Tuesday, the crack had completely closed up :D.
The coring itself went ok, but this was some of the hardest mesquite I've turned. It dulled my gouges very quickly so there were lots of trips to the grinder.
The big bowl is about 11" x 4" (might be a little deeper) and they're all finished with DO.

Beautiful stuff, Kathy!! Obviously, you have a personal relationship with your wood. When you gave that large blank the "evil eye" it immediately knew it should not have cracked and corrected the problem. I wish you would come and have a talk with some of my wood!!:D

Kathy,
You and that McNaughton really work well together! The bowls look great. A friend of mine doesn't do anything with sealing bowls he simply watches them and if a crack develops he put CA on it while it's small and he says he's not had any problems after that. I've tried it and it seems to work well, you just have to catch them early and that's my failure.

Kathy... beautiful work! Love the rich coloring! I have had a few cracked pieces magically heal themselves but once the humidity dropped, the cracks reappeared. Mesquite behaves a little differently, so hope your experience is not the same!

Kathy, very nice cored set of bowls. Mesquite turns great, too bad we don't have any here in Virginia.

Nice nested set and the warmth of the mesquite really shows in these pieces and how you finished them.

Very nice Kathy. I sure have enjoyed coring bowl instead of shoveling piles of sawdust. You have a nice set there.

You might say you scared the crack out of it...

Beautiful set of bowls....

Thanks guys! Nice to think the intimidation factor is working and maybe I have the workings as a wood wisperer :D.
I may just have to try coring a set from African sumac next!

Beautiful bowls Kathy. Hope the crack remains invisible or at least hard to see.
