This is my first post, so a little background / intro.

I've been getting into woodworking through house projects and become reacquanted with how rewarding it was back in high school. At this point, I've run into needing a bandsaw. I have been keeping an eye out on Craig'sList for nearly a year, but after being ignored on the one good-looking deal to come up (Powermatic model 81 for $300, 1 town over!) I've just decided to buy new. After reading the numerous (too many?) band saw related threads, I've more or less cut the list to the Rikon 10-345 (18") or the Grizzly G0514X2b. There are some differences and at full price I think I'd go with the Grizzly...but the Rikon is on sale at woodcraft for most of March, and that 5-year warranty sounds sweet....now it's not so clear.

I've seen the Grizzly at the showroom in Muncy, PA, but I can not find a Rikon within ~100 miles, it seems. I was hoping to see one at the Somerset, NJ woodworking and DIY show, but over 14" I only saw a Jet and a Hammer. Local voco schools have not been helpful, and I feel like I've run out of options, so I plead: are there any creekers in the central-ish NJ area who wouldn't mind a born-again woodworker stopping by with a 6-pack of your favorite refreshment?

Cannot help you with your need but I would recommend for you to find about the Central Jersey Woodworkers Association which meets second Wed of each month. Yo may meet others in your area and make new friends... Who knows there may even one selling his/her bandsaw near you.

Ruhi: Thank you, that was a good idea that was not obvious to me at the outset. I did make contact with them at their both at the show, but I wanted to cast a wider net, as well as pursuing joining a semi-local club.

If you are still condsidering the G0514X2B here is some more information for your perusal:

http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/f31-power-tools-their-use/g0514x2b-here-1-16-a-41278.html

You are welcome to stop by for a visit, but NC is a bit of drive from NJ.

Justin, I am making the same deliberation right now. Leaning towards the g0514x2. That rack and pinion tale is very tempting.

I am guessing you meant 514X2 or have you changed your mind...

PS will send you a PM in just a little while.

Mark, I love to drive and I appreciate the offer, alas, it will be some time before I can make it to your fair state again. A couple question if I might:

Now that you've had your saw a few months, how would you characterize its behavior re-sawing 8"+ stock?

Are blade changes difficult with re-adjusting the lower guides?

Are the tension and upper guide adjustment wheels metal or plastic? (Thanks for the link to your pictures, it's been a little while since I saw the 514 in person.)

Do you feel the rack and pinion able support is a key feature?

Prashun,

Yeah, it's boiled down to a few details that I am probably over analyzing...to the point where I was checking out the 555 you were selling (as a hold-over) just to avoid further agonizing!

Grizzly G0514X2B advantages:
1/2 HP more, ~100sqr in more table (mostly inside throat), rack and pinion table support, motor brake, ~40lb heavier, made in Taiwan (Rikon?)
w/ coupon: $1535 shipped + tax

Rikon 10-345 advantages:
2nd miter slot (inside throat), 5deg more left tilt, 5 year warranty, lower guide bearings a little easier to adjust
on sale: 1245 shipped + tax

I have until 30Mar to decide...

I have the 10-345 and were I to choose again would pick the grizzly. The build quality is better IMO

I just bought the G0514X2. I think the only diff is the brake. I like the foot brake.

C'mon, pull the trigger today on YOUR saw and we can be bandsaw buddies!

Bought the new one already, eh Prashun? :-) I've got the G0555 setup and ran a few test cuts through it. I like it... only issue is that it still smells like perfume. :-)
